John Alonge

Founder San Diego Wine & Culinary Center

A well-respected “educational entertainer” on food and wine topics, Alongé’s decision to open the San Diego Wine and Culinary Center was a natural progression of his passion for what he has dubbed the “Bounty of the County.”  With over a decade of working among the vineyards of the Loire Valley in France and cultivating ownership of several restaurants throughout the world, Alongé’s experience has ripened into a blueprint for urban wineries across the United States.

“The execution of the concept that is the San Diego Wine and Culinary Center represents a wonderful professional challenge for me,” Alonge said.  “With the renaissance of Southern Californian wines, I saw the opportunity to showcase them in a fresh way that balanced the sophistication and appreciation of an art form in the convenience of a winery themed environment complete with the abundance of regional produce that heretofore could only be found at a vineyard.  We’ve achieved that balance.”

His first hand experience planting, harvesting, elaborating and bottling red and white wines in the Loire Valley in France fueled his lifelong passion for food and wine.  Since then, he has owned and operated successful restaurants around the world and served as Director of Food and Beverage for a major San Francisco-based hotel and restaurant group. His affiliation with numerous San Diego County wineries has allowed him to participate actively in the renaissance of fine wines in southern California.

Alongé is actively involved in the San Diego County Vintners Association, the California Restaurant Association, the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau and the San Diego Chapter of Meeting Professionals International. He regularly gives animated food and wine presentations to corporate and private groups as well as teaching wine industry classes at San Diego State University.
