The Goldman family owned and operated the historic York Mountain Winery for 30 years prior to selling most of the property in 2001, where Steve was winemaker, vineyardist and general manager. Steve retained a portion of the original ranch and in 2002 started building a new cellar and planting an estate vineyard dedicated solely to Pinot Noir, this winemaker’s passion. Steve’s wife Lori, a Paso Robles native, served eight years as programs manager for the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance before retiring after son Max was born and becoming directly involved with all cellar operations.
Pinot Noir is the focus for the Stephen’s brand with Chardonnay and Claret complimenting the small production. The winemaking technique is traditional with a modern twist on grapes grown using sustainable, organic and biodynamic techniques from neighboring vineyards. Steve’s basic philosophy: “Retain the integrity of the grapes with environmental respect and nurture the wine’s development with restraint to allow the wine to be as natural as possible.” Over 400 awards and accolades have been garnered, including winemaker of the year by the Central Coast Wine Growers Association. Board terms include Wine Institute, Central Coast Growers Association and the Paso Robles Vintners and Growers Association.
