Neil Roberts
Winemaker and Proprietor of Clavo Cellars
WINEMAKER NEIL ROBERTS
Neil Roberts put down roots on the Central Coast more than 20 years ago and is today recognized as one of the area's premier viticulturists, growing grapes for some of the region's fines vineyards under the banner of Roberts Vineyard Services. As winemaker and proprietor of Clavo Cellars, Neil comes full circle, literally making his wines from the ground to the glass. By personally guiding all phases of winegrowing and winemaking, Neil is able to achieve his stated goal of crafting wines that vividly express the character of the vineyard. "I put a tremendous amount of thought and care into making these wines," Neil says. "But once the cork is pulled, it all comes down to the simple pleasure of experiencing everything that a remarkable vineyard has to offer."
ABOUT CLAVO CELLARS
Clavo Cellars specializes in hand-grown artisan wines that express the character and culture of Paso Robles on California's Central Coast. Under the guidance of veteran winegrower and winemaker Neil Roberts, Clavo focuses on varietals that excel amid some of the region's most notable vineyards, including Margarita Vineyard along the southern rim of the Paso Robles appellation.
The name Clavo means "nail" in Spanish – a play on Neil's name. He acquired this nickname early in his career as a viticulturist, as given to him by the Mexican-American vineyard workers. It was a form of acceptance, as well as an invitation into their world. Clavo wines are dedicated to these people and all who have inspired Neil along the way.
As a viticulturist with more than 20 years of experience, Neil is not only passionate about the craft of grape growing, but also enjoys access to some of the finest fruit in the region. The resulting wines are made to express the pure personality of the vineyard. These wines are offered in a spirit of approachability and enjoyment, embracing the casual elegance for which the Central Coast is renowned.
